Ashley’s Hair Journey

Ashley’s Hair Journey

July 28, 2018

Hi everyone and welcome to my Curly Hair Magic website. Curling my hair has been something I’ve been trying to perfect since I was about 15 years old and over the years, I have tried almost every advice, tips, DIY, products, hairstyles, to improve my curls and my texture.

Being from Jamaica I had limited opportunities in terms of products and advice. Often times I would have to find alternatives online to help me with my hair. This usually meant I’d twist, cornrow or plait my hair and leave it for maybe two weeks at a time.

Having learned what I have learned and seeing my progress, now I want to help others going through the same issues.

Over the years I’ve learned about textures, types of hair, how to find the right products that can help you improve your hair and get it to where you want it.

My First Curl

First I have to say all the content on curly hair wasn’t available like it is now, or if it was I didn’t see it, so I was truly on my own when it came to curling my hair and the first mistake I made was not fixing my heat damage. Although I am biracial and so is my mom ( she has a thicker texture than me though) I grew up on blow-dryer and twists, cornrows and plaits.

When I was younger in prep school my hair was always washed, blow-dried and again cornrow, twist or plait for two weeks without starting the process all over and in between that process I would use some hairs oil. This continued until Summer 2017.

Before that Summer I was trying to use the blow-dryer a lot less to try to get a difference but my hairdresser had no patience for combing my hair wet and I didn’t really like it because it made my hair shrink.

My first curl or so I thought it was in high school, when after two weeks or my hair being in twists I untwisted and left out, of course due to the heat damage that I built over the years of blow-drying and trying to flat iron my hair ( back then I thought I looked better with flat ironed hair) It didn’t really curl, it was more of beginner locs.

My first rod set was for a birthday party and I used Dr. Miracle’s Curl Soft Hold Creme ( love the smell of this stuff, so minty); it’s a really good product but again years of heat damage so before I even got tot the party my hair became a fuzzy mess and I had to bun it with an elastic and I was conscious about my hair the entire party.

Summer 2017 Hair

Summer 2017 was when I actually went for properly curling my hair, thanks to inspiration from YouTube. I was abroad for the summer so products were really accessible to me; so I went online Bought some really good products and started curling my hair.

My hair was really thin, like feather- thin, it had no bounce or thickness because of again years of heat damage;nevertheless I used the finger coiling method, deep conditioned, bought some castor oil and after a couple weeks got some decent curls.

Now my first REAL curl was Sept-2017 I had discovered DevaCurl, got a DevaCurl Cut and bought a trial packet for their moisturizing deep conditioner, among other products ( keep in mind devacurl was not my official deep conditioner).

I was back in Jamaica and getting ready for University, I washed, deep conditioned my hair, used my styling products and finger coiled my hair ( at this point I used the entire Summer to train my curls so the heat damage was erased as most of it was cut off anyway and my curls were taking shape). After that I never went back to the blow-drying, but I still occasionally twist, plait or cornrow my hair.

Upgrade your Curls

When I started my Curl Journey, I used YouTube and other websites to make things so much easier in my hair care journey and that’s what I want to do for you. I want to help make things easier and offer my insight especially for those with a mix of type 3 and 4 hair but this is for everyone overall.

All the products, advice and hairstyles may not work for everyone( because even with the same hair type everyone is different) but If I can help change the curls in someone’s life, then for me it would be worth it.

I really enjoyed your article. I think you have described what a lot of us girls have had to suffer through – finding the right products and process for our hair and then getting it to do what we want it to do. I can so relate to the story of when your hairstyle started out, it looked great but by the time you got to the party, it was a mess and you had to come up with a quick plan b then only to be subconscious about it the rest of the night…been there, done that. as I have gotten older, my hair texture has changed but through the years I learned what my hair needed. for me it was during the summer, it was cornrowed into a really nice style and then during the rest of the year, i had a relaxer. However, i don’t get relaxers every few weeks – i get them every few months instead. this helped me leave my hair alone long enough to let it grow in the summer and then also get a break from the chemicals. over the last few months, i have left my hair alone again and gotten a style where it looks good but I am not constantly putting heat, etc. on it. i am looking forward to seeing what my hair looks like when i change my style again.
keep up the great work with your website. sharing your journey will help others.
    have an awesome day.

    warm regards,
    yvette

Practical advice at its best! I think I’m a 4 and I never did like curls…they make my hair look shorter, but after reading this, my word! I need a curly do.

In the curly hair world, shrinkage is real and most of use don’t like your hair being short, but just embrace your curls for what they are and they’re ways to combat shrinkage. I’ll be writing about it real soon.
