DIY Products for Curly Hair

August 5, 2018

At one point I was broke and tired of not being able to manage my hair because I was out of products or couldn’t the right products, so I turned to DIY. Do-IT-Yourself Curly Hair Products, from shampoo and conditioner to deep conditioners to curl cream and curl gels. Here are my diy curly hair products, tried, tested and proven.

DIY Flaxseed Curly Gel

Flaxseed Hair Gel is inexpensive and easy to make. With superior hold and is suited for all hair types from straight to wavy to kinky. It’s great for wash n go’s, sleek styles, twists and twist outs and sets the twists once dry for a lovely twist out. Its cost effective and can be reused. One con though, is that flaxseed gel can be really messy to make. So if you want all natural gel and wanna avoid the mess then you can check out http://curlmix.com. They are an all natural company that focuses on making handmade, vegan pure gels, that’s what it literally says on the bottle, PURE GEL. They also focus on body butters and hair moisturizers.

Benefits of flax seed gel:

Vitamin E in the flax seeds helps prevent premature discoloration or graying of hair. Also, it speeds the process of hair growth and helps prevents dandruff.

How to make it:

  • Strainer or stocking sock
  • Wood spoon
  • Bowl or air tight container
  • 2 cups of water
  • 1/4 cup of flax seed depending on how thick you want it
  • 2 tbsp of honey (optional) Essential Oils (optional)

Pour 2 cups of water and 1/4 cup of flax seed into a pot, on low/medium bring it to a boil stirring flax seed often with preferably a wood spoon. Turn off heat when a white frothy gel like liquid forms. Continue stirring while it simmers. Place strainer or stocking sock on top of your bowl or container and pour mixture in. Let it cool down, add honey and essential oil.

The shelf life is 12-14 days in the refrigerator.

Homemade Curl Cream

This DIY whipped Shea butter recipe soothes and calms the scalp and protects it from inflammation & irritation. Added benefits can be added depending on the essential oils added. Peppermint Oil added to the curl cream, helps promote hair growth, stimulates the scalp and leaves your hair smelling minty.

Benefits of Shea Butter:

People with curly and coarse hair textures benefit from using Shea butter as a sealant to keep moisture in their hair and increase softness.

How to make it:

  • 1/4 cup of raw Shea butter
  • 2 tablespoons of coconut oil
  • ¼ cup of pure aloe vera gel
  • 10 drops of rosemary essential oil
  • 2 drops of peppermint essential oil
  • Hand Mixer or a whisk

Add 1/4 cup of raw Shea butter and 1 tbsp of coconut oil in a double boiler and gently melt them to liquid form. Let it cool for a few minutes before adding 5 drops of lavender essential oil and 1 tbsp of rose water. Mix well with a spatula. Pop the bowl in the freezer for about 10 minutes. When the time is up, using a hand mixer or a whisk, whip the mixture for about 15 minutes until it’s all white and creamy. Store in a container.

Homemade Conditioner

Three words: Apple Cider Vinegar. This one product does so much for your hair, can be used as both a conditioner or a shampoo. I didn’t believe it at first until I tried it, but it really works.

Benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar:

As a more acidic product, it balances out the alkalizing effect of the baking soda to restore your hair’s natural pH levels. It also helps kill bacteria and is a natural humectant, which means that it helps hold in moisture.

How to make it:

  • 2-3 tbsp raw apple cider vinegar
  • 4 cups of water
  • 1-2 drops essential oil (optional)

After shampooing and rinsing your hair, mix the apple cider vinegar, water, and essential oil (optional) in a plastic bottle. Leaning your head back, pour the rinse over your entire scalp, allowing the mixture to run through your hair. Be careful to avoid contact with your eyes. Let the mixture sit on your hair for 1-2 minutes. Then, rinse thoroughly.

DIY Shampoo

Baking Soda can be found in almost every home and can be used for a variety of things, whether it’s cleaning your cat litter or doing the laundry and so much more. But did you know baking soda can be used to wash your hair?

Benefits of Baking Soda:

Baking soda is known as a fantastic cleaning product in general. Its main benefit is the fact that it is a mild alkali with fine, slightly abrasive particles. These two factors work together to break down dirt and grease incredibly effectively, leaving your hair super squeaky clean. It also is not a common irritant and so should not cause issues for most people. Note: Be aware that baking soda can be rather drying, so you’ll want to keep it to the scalp. Don’t rub it into the tips of your hair.

How to make it:

  • 2-3 tbsp of baking soda
  • 3-4 cups of warm water
  • 1-2 drops essential oil (optional)

Apply the diy shampoo in the shower and try to keep it at scalp level as it can be rather drying. Let it sit for 1-2 minutes, then rinse thoroughly.

DIY Deep Conditioner

Your everyday food items can be used to create a rich, creamy deep conditioner that can be used to rejuvenate the hair and bring it back to life. This diy deep conditioner is good for adding shine and moisture to your air, it also reduces frizziness and strengthens and promotes hair growth. Can be used on any type of hair.

How to make it:

  • 1 banana
  • 1/2 avocado
  • 2 tbsp of olive oil
  • 1 tbsp of honey
  • 2 tbsp of castor oil
  • 1 egg ( optional: to make the mask into a protein mask)
  • 2 tbsp of mayonnaise (optional: to make the mask into a protein mask)
  • bowl and whisk or mixer

Whisk all the ingredients together until well blended. But make sure it isn’t too watery if it is add 1 tsp more of honey or you can leave it watery. Add evenly throughout the hair and place a plastic cap over the hair and let it sit for no more than 30 minutes.

Conclusion

There are great products out there that can be used to benefit your hair, but if you’re looking for a cost-effective way that still works 100% Then these DIY’s are for you.

This is a really lovely post. I have thick 4c hair, and I believe these would work perfectly for me. I actually didn’t know that you could use baking soda as a shampoo-I find that amazing. Thanks for writing this. It’s really a good job well done.
