There are many products out there that claim to “perfect your curls”. But the truth is, only you can perfect your hair and improve its texture, you can’t change your texture, it’s in your genetics, but you can improve it. No product can change your hair texture; it can though help to make things easier when it comes to styling your hair, depending on how you want it to look. Here is a look at some of the best NATURAL curly hair products for black hair I’ve seen, used and reviewed so far.
Note: I buy products for my hair according to what it likes, and my hair like thick products, it doesn’t do well with water-based products, but I will include some water-based products that I have tried.
For this product, I’ve used almost everything except their Coconut Supercream and Decadence Shampoo and Conditioner, and I have to say for a product that is so pricey, it does wonders for my hair. Devacurl stated in NewYork City in 1994 and has expanded its operations well into the new age of hair care.
I truly believe it has a product for everyone from type 1 to type 4 hair. I specifically have used the Devacurl Ultra Defining Gel, Devacurl Set it Free Spray, Devacurl Melt into Moisture Deep Conditioner, Deva curl Deep Sea Repair Protein Treatment and Devacurl Buildup Buster.
I love these products, they are all natural, no sulfates, parabens or silicones, they truly work magic on your hair. BUT, the prices are steep, These products are really a splurge, a treat for yourself; and while I do believe it is worth it, in this day and age where money isn’t easy to come by, the prices could be a little better.
The Ultra Defining Gel is truly Ultra defining I got some of my best curls with these products and it is one of the few gel, that doesn’t crunch your curls.
If I could afford only one product, I would buy the Devacurl Melt into Moisture Deep Conditioner. It is one of the best deep conditioners out there and truly lives up to its name Melt into Moisture. ( More about deep conditioner later)
I’ve had a love-hate relationship with Aunt Jackie’s when I just started curling my hair, way back in high school, I didn’t know how to curl my hair properly and I blamed Aunt Jackie’s products for my hair not curling, so I gave it up for a long, very long while. But now its 2018, I’ve gained knowledge and I welcomed Aunt Jackie’s back into my hair products family. Specifically Aunt Jackie’s Don’t Shrink Flaxseed Elongation Curling Gel. This is one of the best gels out there for giving definition and reducing frizz and shrinkage to your curls. (This is the gel I am currently using.)
This gel is all natural no parabens, silicones or sulfates and its thickness is on point and the product does fulfill all its promises. So if your’e looking for a gel to replace your Eco-Styler, This is a fine replacement and its not as steep as other products, and pretty affordable for a 15 oz jar.
Eden Coconut Natural Curl Defining Creme
This 16 oz jar is HEAVEN ON EARTH for me right now. The thickness is beautiful, It’s just the right texture, It’s not too thick so it weighs down my hair but you know its not water-based either. As stated in its name there is coconut in it and you can smell it as soon as you open the jar. It isn’t a sweet smell that over powers you, its just right.
Not all cremes are moisturizing but this creme, the moisture it provides to your hair, makes you feel fabulous, you don’t wanna stop toughing your hair. Usually moisturizing cremes don’t give as much definition as gels, but Eden Coconut Curl Defining Creme breaks that barrier. It’s great to use on its own or with a gel, the choice is up to you and its one of the cheaper options out there, you get value for your money.
Jane Carter Solutions
Having tried the entire Curls to Go product line (I even went as far as to buy the travel size pack), I can honestly say that this entire line of products is water-based. It is has a running consistency I really didn’t appreciate, whenever I used this product I had to have a microfiber towel on hand to use and it would run right through my hair.
Nevertheless, this product line is great, one of its best qualities is the shiny it adds to your hair, if you’re looking for a water-based line that adds shine and moisture, this is it. Although my hair didn’t like the consistency very much, the products did a wonderful job of moisturizing my hair and adding shine to hair, my hair was always shiny for the entire week while using thus product.
My favorite product in particular is the from a different product line and its the Jane Carter Quench Curl Hydrator for second day hair. This product set the bar really high for second day hair products, I finished it so quickly I had to buy a second bottle because I finished it so quickly. Not to say that you need a lot but I loved this product so much I couldn’t stop using it. It made my second, third, fourth and even fifth hair bomb and I couldn’t put it down.
All Jane Carter Solutions products are sulfate, paraben and silicone free, EXCEPT the Curls to Go Curl Drench Cleansing Co-Wash and Curls to Go Mist me Over Curl Hydrator.
First off, let me just say these products are not sulfate, paraben and silicone free. But if you don’t mind a little sulfate and your’e like me where you do a hair cleanse at the beginning of each month, then these are the products for you.
Just because I am reviewing this product last and it has all these “bad” ingredients for your hair, do not underestimate them. I have personally tried this product line and you can’t possibly hope for any more moisture than what this line provides. I use the conditioner as a leave-in and yes I am probably breaking curly hair rules, but that’s how good the product is, it is so moisturizing, my hair has never been softer using this line of shampoo, conditioner and deep conditioner and its not pricey, its just within my budget and I’m a full time student, so I’m almost always broke.
And for those who don’t have 20-30 minutes to spend deep conditioner. The Aussie 3-Minute Miracle Deep Conditioner is what you need, although the shampoo and conditioner has silicone the deep conditioners is all natural and all the benefits of a deep conditioner in 3 minutes and yes you can leave it on for longer if you have the time.
